Thank you to Helen Low and Sharon Irvine from Our Lady of Good Counsel Domestic Abuse Services for speaking to our group about domestic abuse and the resources available to victims of abuse. Our CWL council was also happy to present them with a donation from funds collected through our ‘Change for Change’ initiative. CWL members and other parishioners have been contributing their spare change throughout this year to support Domestic Abuse Services in the valuable work they do. Our CWL council shares the dream of Domestic Abuse Services: for everyone to live without fear.
Domestic Abuse services provides a number of supports to those seeking relief from abuse including:
- A helpline that operates from 10am-10pm everyday. The helpline number is 604-640-7549 (or 1-888-833-7733).
- Resource workers who meet with clients to provide assistance.
- Eva’s House, which is a Catholic second stage transition house for women (and their children) fleeing abuse.
Helen and Sharon spoke to us about a need for volunteers to assist in taking calls from the helpline. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer for the helpline, or helping another area, click on the following link: how you can help.
Another way to support the work done by Domestic Abuse Services is to participate in their upcoming Walkathon on Sunday, October 14th, at Tynehead Regional Park in Surrey. The walking trail is paved, and has some gently rolling hills. Participants may walk, bike, push strollers or walkers, and even bring leashed dogs. The fun begins with a zoomba warm-up and continues with live music throughout the day. Visit their website for further details and to register. So, gather your friends and family to participate, increase awareness of the issue of domestic abuse, and raise money for a worthy cause.
